Badgers Host Summer Wrestling Camps
April 21, 2008 | Wrestling
The University of Wisconsin wrestling team will be staying very busy this summer by hosting various wrestling camps in Madison during the months of June and July. The Badgers will host a total of three different camps, beginning with the Intensive Freestyle/Greco camp from June 22-26, the Skills Camp from June 29-July 2 and finally, the Team Camp from July 6-9.
Badger coaches Barry Davis, Donny Pritzlaff and Bart Chelesvig will be on hand to serve as the camp instructors while various UW wrestlers will serve as camp counselors. Those wrestlers include two-time All-American Craig Henning, 2008 All-American Dallas Herbst, NCAA qualifiers Trevor Brandvold, Zach Tanelli and Kyle Ruschell, as well as Ben Sarbacker and Kendall Vogel.
The intensive freestyle camp is designed for serious wrestlers who want to be challenged physically and mentally. The camp will focus on both Freestyle and Greco wrestling and campers will learn from some of the best in the country as coach Davis was a two-time member of the U.S. Olympic Freestyle team and a silver medalist in 1984. Pritzlaff is also currently training for a spot on the U.S. Olympic Freestyle team for this summer's games in Beijing.
The skills camp will teach wrestlers the fundamentals and drills of the sport. It will consist of 80 percent high end skill instruction, which will focus on proper technique, and the other 20 percent of the time will be for the athletes to test their new skills in live combat situations. The ages of this particular camp range from 8 to 18.
Finally, the team camp will work with wrestling programs on dual competition as well as daily technical instruction. This camp provides a great opportunity for team building and allows coaches to work closely with the UW athletes and coaching staff.
