July 05, 2008 | Wrestling
While most were celebrating the Fourth of July with fireworks, food and fun, four future Badger grapplers spent the last few days competing at the 2008 Junior Freestyle National Duals in Oklahoma City. Competition began Wednesday, July 2 and finished up on Friday, July 4. Cole Schmitt (New Glarus, Wis.), Trey Bertram (Woodbury, Minn.), Tom Kelliher (Burnsville, Minn.) and Travis Rutt (New Prague, Minn.) are four of the nine incoming freshmen in head coach Barry Davis's 2008-09 recruiting class and they competed for their respective states at the duals.
Schmitt wrestled for the Wisconsin team and he went 5-1 at 145 lbs. Two of his wins came by pin while two others came by tech fall. The Wisconsin team went 3-2 in pool play to advance to the consolation bracket, but lost to Texas, 35-26 in the opening dual.
Bertram, Kelliher and Rutt all competed for the Minnesota 1 team that finished fourth overall. The team went 3-1 in pool play and defeated Oklahoma (32-26) and Pennsylvania (41-24) before falling to New Jersey (33-27) in the third place bout.
After going 5-0 at the Junior Greco-Roman National Duals just a few days earlier, Rutt again had a successful showing at the Freestyle Duals. He finished 4-1 overall at 171 lbs. and had two tech falls as well as one pin.
Kelliher wrestled just two bouts for the Minnesota 1 team but won both of them at 125 lbs.
