September 19, 2008 | Men's Golf
The 23rd-ranked University of Wisconsin men's golf team will return to the course for their third tournament of the year on Saturday when they travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. for the 2008 Wolverine Intercollegiate. Taking place at the par-71, 6,704-yard U-M Golf Course, the 16-team field will play 36 holes on Saturday and the final 18 on Sunday.
Competing for the Badgers will be seniors Dan Woltman (Beaver Dam, Wis.), Tyler Obermueller (River Falls, Wis.) and Danny Zimmerman (Verona, Wis.) and juniors Jordan Elsen (Kenosha, Wis.) and Nick Engen (McFarland, Wis.).
The Badgers should receive some tough competition at the tournament as 10 of the 16 teams are currently ranked in the Golfweek Top-100. California (No. 9) is the top-ranked team in the field, with Colorado State (18), Michigan (26), San Diego (29), UC Davis (32), Xavier (53), Eastern Michigan (59), Missouri (64) and Iowa State (83) in the mix.
Ranked 13th, UC Davis' Austin Graham is the top-ranked individual competing, but four others in the top-50 will also be represented. Woltman is Wisconsin's highest-ranked player at No. 181.
In their last tournament, the Badgers captured fifth at the 2008 Gopher Invitational. Wisconsin used a seven-over par round of 295 in the third and final round to finish 20-over par for the tournament with an 884 (304-285-295). It was the team's best finish of the young season, surpassing its ninth-place finish at the USF Olympic Club Intercollegiate.
Woltman and Obermueller each tied for 11th with a four-over par score of 220. Woltman shot an opening round of 80, but followed that up with two straight rounds of 70. Obermueller also shot an 80 in round one. He bounced back with a career-best 68 in round two and a 72 in round three. Elsen tied for 26th with an eight-over 224 (71-73-80), while Zimmerman tied for 34th (77-74-75) by shooting a 10-over 226 and fellow senior Patrick Duffy (Appleton, Wis.) finished in a tie for 49th as he shot a 17-over 233 (76-79-78).
Tee times for Saturday's opening round are set for 7:30 a.m. (CT) with the second round set to begin at 1 p.m. (CT).
