
Badgers capture second at St. Mary's Invitational

Thanks to a second straight round under-par, the 51st-ranked University of Wisconsin men 's golf team captured second at the St. Mary's Invitational on Tuesday at the par-71, 6,639-yard Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, Calif.
The Badgers were tied for third after round two, but shot a one-under 283 during the final round to earn their best finish in a tournament since the VCU Shootout on Oct. 1-2 of last season. Wisconsin ended the St. Mary's Invitational eight strokes over-par with an 860 (296-281-283).
Junior Jordan Elsen (Kenosha, Wis.) had the best finish of his career as he ended in a three-way tie for third place. Elsen, who entered the final round in fifth at one-under par, shot a final round 70 to end the tournament two-under par with a 211 (72-69-70). The three-round total set a new personal-best for 54 holes, bettering the old mark of 216. Elsen's previous best finish was a tie for 17th at the 2006 Memphis Invitational.
Senior Tyler Obermueller (River Falls, Wis.) earned his best finish of the season, finishing with a tie for ninth. He shot a one-over 72 on Tuesday to end one-over par with a 214 (74-68-72). One day after setting a season-best mark for 36 holes, Obermueller set a new-season best mark, and was just one stroke off his career-best for 54 holes with his 214.
Finishing one stroke behind Obermueller was fellow senior Dan Woltman (Beaver Dam, Wis.). Woltman had his best round of the tournament on Tuesday, shooting a two-under 69 to finish in a tie for 11th with a two-over 215 (73-73-69).
Senior Dan Zimmerman (Verona, Wis.) shot a two-over 73 on Tuesday to finish eight strokes over par with a 221 (77-71-73). Zimmerman finished in a tie for 42nd.
Sophomore Craig Cerbins (Berlin, Wis.) was competing in the first collegiate tournament of his career and finished in a tie for 76th. Cerbins had the best round of his career with a one-over 72 in round three. He finished 18-over par with a 231 (79-80-72).
Next up for the men's golf team will be the Memphis Intercollegiate, Oct. 6-7 in Memphis, Tenn.
