Badgers finish eighth in season opener

The Badger men's golf team opened the season at the 12-team Gopher Invitational in Wayzata, Minn., placing eighth with an 306-29429300---893. Southern Methodist University was the wire-to-wire leader winning the 54-hole event with a nine-under par 855. Arkansas was second with 865 and the hosts were third with 872.
SMU's Kelly Kraft ran away with the medalist honors shooting a 15 under 201 including a 64 in the final round. Ben Pisani of Minnesota was second with a seven-under par 209.
Jordan Elsen was the top Badger individual tying for 14th with a three-over par 72-70-77--219. Making his collegiate debut, freshman Michael Sorenson started the day tied for 43rd and moved up to a tie for 21st with his 76-75-71--222. Another freshman, Anthony Aicher of Wausau, Wis., found his comfort zone in the third round shooting the best 18-hole round for UW with 80-75-69--224.
Redshirt freshman Brady Keegan tied for 62nd with a 78-80-76--234. Freshman Sam Frank concluded his first college tournament tied for 65th with 82-74-80--236. Junior Craig Cergins rounded out the Badger scoring tying for 69th with 81-74-83--238.
The youth of the 2009 team is well-demonstrated with four of the six Badgers on the weekend travel squad playing in their first college invitational. The team travels to the Wolverine Invitational Sept. 26-27 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
