MADISON, Wis. – After improving seven spots in the Big Ten Conference standings, the Wisconsin women’s soccer team had two players named second-team All-Big Ten honorees while four rookies made the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. Sophomore forward Laurie Nosbusch and freshman midfielder Alev Kelter mark UW’s first appearance on the All-Big Ten Conference Teams since Kara Kabellis earned first team honors in 2006.
Kelter joins Paige Adams, Monica Lam-Feist and Lindsey Johnson on the All-Freshman Team. Senior Ashley Hedges was named the team’s Sportsmanship Award honoree.
Nosbusch had an impressive Big Ten season, scoring six goals during league play, including her first career hat trick in a 3-2 victory over No. 19 Indiana. Nosbusch finished the regular season leading the Badgers in nearly every category including points with 17.
The four Badger freshmen were vital to helping UW to its first NCAA tournament berth since 2005, starting in nearly every position on the field. On defense Johnson helped anchor the Badgers backline in shutting down opposing team’s offenses. Johnson was part of a defense that had eight shutouts.
Kelter and Lam-Feist helped the transition game with a strong presence in the midfield. Kelter has a great ball-winning presence and athleticism heading in both of UW’s goals in a 2-1 win over DePaul. Lam-Feist’s strong dribbling and passing skills helped her to three assists this season. Most notably, Lam-Feist scored the game-tying goal in the final 18 seconds of regulation against 19th-ranked Ohio State, to get the 1-1 draw.
After missing eight games due to an injury, Adams returned to the squad as the second-leading scorer. Scoring all three of her goals in the final four games of the season, Adams teamed up with Nosbusch for all nine of her points, which all came during Big Ten play.
Wisconsin looks to make a run in the 2009 NCAA Tournament beginning on Friday night against Arizona State. The Badgers kick off the tournament at 7:30 p.m. at the McClimon Soccer Complex.
