The Badgers concluded their fall season on Tuesday with a ninth place finish, carding an 870 (295-284-291), at the 2009 Challenge at Onion Creek in Austin, Texas.
In the 21-team tournament, Texas A&M notched the first place position with a 1-under-par 839 (286-275-278) at the par-70, 5,938-yard Onion Creek Club North Course. Julie Boland and Ashley Freeman of Texas A&M placed in the top two spots, tallying a 206 (67-70-69) and 207 (74-66-67), respectively.
Several of the Wisconsin women's golfers finished the tournament with season-best 18, 36 or 54- hole scores.
Sophomore Jessie Gerry led the Badgers with a score of 216 (76-67-73). The Madison, Wis., native proved her ability to bounce back strong after struggling through the first 18-holes with seven bogeys and only one birdie. Gerry snagged her best 18-hole score of the season in the second round when she had six birdies to card a 3-under-par, 67. After completing round three with a score of 73, she tied for 27th place overall out of 108 participants.
Finishing just one stroke behind Gerry was freshman Alyssa Elliott (Madison, Wis.). It was a career day for Elliott as she carded her best 18, 36 and 54 holes. In the first round she beat her former best single-round score of 73, tallied at the Lady Cougar Classic from Sept. 13-14 with a 2-over-par, 72. In round two, despite stroking a 2-over-par 6 on No. 10, she finished the first 36-holes with an impressive 144. Elliott topped off the day tying for 30th overall, carding her best 54-hole score of her career with a 7-over-par, 217 (72-72-73).
Senior Molly Schemm (Fort Atkinson, Wis.) finished one stroke behind Elliott with a score of 218 (69-75-74) to tie for 32nd place overall. Schemm carded a 69 in round one to tie for her season-best single-round score. She also tallied a 69 in the first round of the Lady Cougar Classic.
Kenosha, Wis., native, Carly Werwie, was just two strokes behind Schemm, tying for 49th overall with a 10-over-par 220 (79-70-71). The junior made up for a tough first round with a season-low 18-hole score of 70 in the second round. She finished with a 220 at the end of all 54-holes to solidify her best three-round score of the season.
Senior Kelsey Verbeten (Green Bay, Wis.) tied for 100th place with a 233 (78-79-76).
The Badgers will be back in full swing from Feb. 7-9 for the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
