GUELPH, CA--Saturday, Nov. 28 was a great day for Wisconsin men's cross country. Former Badger Simon Bairu and freshman Mohammed Ahmed claimed victories at the 2009 AGSI Canadian Cross Country Championships.
Bairu (2002-2005) registered his seventh Canadian national cross country title in eight attempts. Bairu finished the race 42 seconds ahead of the second place finisher with a time of 28:49.8. By winning the race, he qualified for his fifth appearance at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Poland in March.
Coming off an All-America weekend at the NCAA Championship, true freshman Mohammed Ahmed won the Canadian junior national cross country title in a time of 24:09.0. Ahmed just missed the title last year by half a second. Ahmed is also hopeful to compete in the Worlds later this year.
