
Celebrate Black History Month: Pam Moore

In honor of Black History month, the University of Wisconsin athletic department will celebrate the stories of 28 former African-American student-athletes or coaches, one for each day in the month of February. (see table updated daily )
The UW athletic program launched its ' Celebrate UW 's Black History ' section on UWBadgers.com in 2003. It has been updated every year with new information, a typeid=2&deptid=200&eventid=1130yearID=2008-2009"> --> photo gallery and multimedia offerings and is one of the finest college resources for African-American athletics history in the nation.
Today we celebrate former national champion track All-American HOFID=188"> --> Pam Moore .
This transition to strictly track provided Moore with major success as she won numerous titles and also contributed to setting school and even a world record. Moore was a 10-time Big Ten Conference champion in the 400-meter dash and relays. She was a member of the eight Big Ten championship teams in indoor and outdoor track.
Moore won the 400 meters at the 1981 AIAW indoor national championships, setting a meet record, and also earned All-America honors in the distance-medley relay in 1981. She was a member of the 1979 world-record-breaking mile relay team, contributing a 57.6 on her 400-meter leg.
As a senior, Moore set the UW indoor and outdoor records in the 400 meters, marks which still stand today ' more than 25 years later. She was also a three-time team MVP.
Moore was rewarded for her successes when she was inducted into the University of Wisconsin's Hall of Fame in 2006. Athleticism seems runs in her genes as her son, Wesley Matthews, who father is former Badger and NBA player Wes Matthews, is a senior and leading scorer for the Marquette Golden Eagles men's basketball team.
