Shields, Galloway earn All-Central Region honors
June 02, 2009 | Women's Rowing
The senior duo of Theresa Shields and Maggie Galloway, the stern pair for Wisconsin 's varsity eight at the recently completed 2009 NCAA Rowing Championships, were both named to the 2009 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association All-Central Region First Team.
Shields, a Grosse Ile, Mich., native, was a member of the 2009 All-Big Ten First Team after helping the boat to a fourth-place finish at the 2009 Big Ten Championships. A 2008 Second-Team All-Big Ten selection, Shields stroked Wisconsin's varsity eight throughout much of her UW rowing career. Team co-captain this past season, Shields won gold with the women's eight at the 2008 FISA World Under-23 Rowing Championships.
Galloway, from Louisville, Ky., sat seven seat for the Badgers at NCAAs. A 2009 Second-Team All-Big Ten pick, she was part of Wisconsin's Big Ten Boat of the Week back on March 24 for the boat's perfect weekend at the Longhorn Invitational.
Nominated student-athletes are evaluated on the strength of their team's regional finish, coaches' recommendations and 2,000-meter erg score. Nominees must be eligible student-athletes who have competed in their teams' varsity boat in 75 percent of races this season.
Shields, Galloway and the rest of the Badger openweight women's rowers completed their seasons this past Sunday with a 13th place team finish at the 2009 NCAA Rowing Championships in Cherry Hill, N.J. The UW varsity four led the way with a runner-up finish, the school's highest boat finish in history.
