Shields named All-American
June 05, 2009 | Women's Rowing
Senior rower Theresa Shields has been named by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association to the 2009 Pocock All-America First Team.
One of UW's openweight co-captains, Shields stroked the varsity eight to a 16th-place finish at the recently completed 2009 NCAA Rowing Championships in Cherry Hill, N.J. A 2009 CRCA All-Central Region First Team pick, Shields was also a member of the 2009 All-Big Ten First Team after helping the boat to a fourth-place finish at both NCAA Central/South Regionals and the Big Ten championships. The boat was named Co-Big Ten Boat of the Week on March 24 for its perfect weekend at the Longhorn Invitational. Last summer, the Grosse Ile, Mich., native won gold with the women's eight at the 2008 FISA World Under-23 Rowing Championships.
A four-year rower in Wisconsin's varsity eight and a three-time NCAA participant, she was named to the 2008 All-Big Ten Second Team and is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
To earn recognition as an All-American, a student-athlete must have rowed at least 75 percent of the current season in the varsity boat and is based on the strength of the finish of the school's varsity eight, coaches' comments and 2000-meter ergometer scores.
