Obermueller wins WSGA Wisconsin State Amateur Championship
July 23, 2009 | Men's Golf
Former Wisconsin Badger Tyler Obermueller battled throughout the day to win the 2009 WSGA Wisconsin State Amateur Championship at Merrill Hills Country Club in Waukesha, Wis. Thursday afternoon.
Tied for the lead with former teammate and senior-to-be Jordan Elsen entering the final round, Obermueller, who was representing River Falls GC, survived a rough front nine and made the shots when he needed down the stretch. After a birdie on No. 1 gave him an early lead, two double bogeys and three bogeys over the next five holes caused Obermueller to lose ground.
He bounced back on the back side though, getting birdies on two of the first four holes. Obermueller was tied with Miles McConnell of Odana Hills through 17 holes, but a bogey on No. 18 by McConnell left the door open for Obermueller.
On the par 4, 421-yard 18th, Obermueller was on the green in regulation. He came up three feet short on a 20-foot birdie putt, but it was close enough that he was able to secure the championship.
