Badgers set to swim at U.S. championships
July 06, 2009 | Men's Swimming & Diving
The American swimming community gathers this week in Indianapolis, Ind., for the ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships, and 14 members of the University of Wisconsin program will look to make their presence known at the largest domestic swimmming event of the year.
A total of 10 members of the UW women's team, along with four from the Badgers men's program, will compete in the five-day event at the IU Natatorium on IUPUI 's campus. The meet, which serves as USA Swimming's national championship event, also will be used as the selection event for the U.S. national team that will compete at the upcoming FINA World Championships.

In addition to the 14 current Badgers who will take to the pool, three former UW swimmers and a pair of incoming freshmen also will compete. Former Badgers Adam Mania (Schroeder YMCA) and Dale Rogers (Longhorn Aquatics) each will swim in four events on the men's side, while Jackie Vavrek will compete in the women's 50-meter freestyle.
Vavrek enters the competition seeded 10th in her event, while Rogers is seeded ninth in the men's 100-meter breaststroke.
Freshman Ashley Wanland, a three-time All-American in her first season at UW, enters as the top-ranked competitor among the current Badgers. The Long Grove, Ill., native is seeded 12th in the 100 breaststroke and 16th in the 200 breaststroke.
Also ranked highly is sophomore Maggie Meyer, who will compete in four events and enters the competition seeded 20th in the 100 backstroke and 24th in the 200 backstroke.
The championships get underway Tuesday -- with six athletes with UW ties will compete on the opening day -- and continues through Saturday. Preliminaries begin at 8 a.m. each day, with the finals session getting underway at 5 p.m. each evening.
Universal Sports will broadcast the finals of Tuesday's and Wednesday 's events live, while NBC will package the remainder of the meet for tape-delay broadcasts on Saturday and Sunday. Also, Swimnetwork.com will carry a live webcast of all preliminary and final races.
