UW's Meyer, Wanland among U.S. Open favorites

The off-season hasn't led to much time off for members of the Wisconsin men 's and women's swimming teams so far this summer, and a number of Badgers will return to the pool yet again this week.
A total of 14 current UW swimmers are set to take part in the 2009 U.S. Open, which begins Tuesday and runs through Saturday in Federal Way, Wash.

The event comes on the heels of last month's USA Swimming National Championships, which also saw 14 current Badgers compete.
Senior-to-be Libby Brooks and rising junior Maggie Meyer will be the Badgers' most active competitors at the national event, as each will compete in four separate events. A total of 10 swimmers from the women's team and four from the men 's program are slated to compete.
Meyer is the Badgers' top title threat and enters the meet ranked among the top 10 in each of her four events. She is seeded second in the 200-meter backstroke, third in the 50-meter freestyle, fifth in the 100 back and ninth in the 100 free.
At last month's USA championships, Meyer was fourth in the 200 backstroke, finished eighth in the 100 free and was 10th-fastest overall in the 100 back.
Ashley Wanland, a three-time All-American in her first season at UW, isn't far behind in terms of title chances, entering the competition as the No. 2 seed in the 200-meter breaststroke and the No. 3 seed in the 100 breast.
Wanland made a splash on the national scene last month by taking sixth place in the 100 breast and then narrowly missing a spot on the U.S. national team for the FINA World Championships by finishing third in the 200 breast at the USA championships.
