The No. 4-ranked Wisconsin men''s cross country team took second place at the Iona Meet of Champions Saturday in the Bronx, N.Y. The Badgers scored 74 points in the 8k race but were edged out by Kent State, who had 59 points.

Senior Craig Miller was the first Badger to cross the finish line, claiming third place just behind Cincinnati's Eric Finan with a time of 25:27.01. The winner of the meet was unattached runner Harbert Okuti (25:20.76).

Redshirt freshman Maverick Darling was the next to cross the finish line for UW, finishing in seventh place with a time of 25:38.70. Senior Ryan Gasper finished close behind with a time of 25:54.41 to take 13th place.

Sophomore Phil Thomas and freshman Noel Bateman rounded out the scoring for the Badgers, placing 23rd and 37th, respectively, in times of 26:06.39 and 26:24.14.

Also competing for UW were senior Tim Pierie and sophomore Daniel Buechel. Pierie finished 44th overall in a time of 26:32.11 and Buechel finished 55th overall in a time of 26:47.05.

'"They ran well,'" head coach Mick Byrne said. " 'Today was more about looking at the supporting cast and seeing who will step up and help us out when we get everybody going on October third."'

The Badgers can next be seen when they return home for The Wisconsin adidas Invitational on Oct. 3. The meet will include teams such as 11-time national champion Arkansas and Big Ten rivals Illinois, Iowa and Michigan.
