Badgers fall to UIC in close battle

Madison, Wis. - The Wisconsin women's tennis team started the day in a tight matchup against Illinois-Chicago. In the first match of the day for UW, the Badgers fell 4-3 after a hard fought battle that came down to a tiebreak decision.
The Badgers jumped out to a 1-0 lead after claiming all three doubles matches. Freshmen Hannah Berner and Kathleen Saltarelli claimed the first Badger win cruising to an 8-0 victory over Illinois-Chicago at the No. 3 doubles slot.
After UW had claimed the doubles point, with a win from Angela Chupa and Aleksandra Markovic at No. 2, UIC made a comeback at No. 1 doubles forcing the set to a tiebreak. UW's Alaina Trgovich and Katya Mirnova pulled out the 8-7 (4) victory over Mariya Kovaleva and Kristen McPhillips.
Wisconsin's Nos. 4 and 6 grabbed quick wins in singles play to bring the Badgers up 3-0. Berner once again set the pace for UW earning the first win over UIC's McPhillips, 6-1, 6-3. UIC fought back to bring the score to a 3-3 tie with wins in the Nos. 1, 2, and 5 spots.
In dramatic fashion, the match came down to a second set tiebreak decision in the No. 3 spot between Wisconsin's Angela Chupa and UIC's Zlatka Petrova. After falling 6-4 in her first set, Chupa gained an early 4-1 lead to give the Badgers hope. Petrova continued to fight bringing the game to a 6-6 tie, and gained a quick 4-0 lead in the tiebreak. Chupa fought back but fell 7-6 (4) to give UIC the win.
After a short break, the Badgers will take on Green Bay at 3 p.m. before finishing off the weekend against Notre Dame on Sunday.
