MADISON, Wis. -- The Big Ten Conference released its All-Big Ten teams and Sportsmanship Award honorees and seven members of the Wisconsin women’s soccer team were awarded, the league announced Wednesday. Junior forward Laurie Nosbusch and junior defender Meghan Flannery were named first team All-Big Ten for the first time in their collegiate careers.
Nosbusch has earned an award in each of her three seasons at UW after being named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team in 2008 and second team All-Big Ten in 2009.
For Flannery, its marks the first award she has received in three seasons with the Badgers.
Junior midfielder Erin Jacobsen joined fellow midfielder sophomore Alev Kelter as two of Wisconsin’s second team All-Big Ten recipients. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Michele Dalton was also named second team All-Big Ten. The award marks Jacobsen’s second in her career after she was named to the All-Big Ten Freshman team in 2008. Kelter, who was named to the 2009 All-Big Ten Freshman and second team All-Big Ten, now has three conference awards under her belt. Dalton's award is the first of her career.
Freshman Catie Sessions earned All-Big Ten Freshman Team honors and becomes the seventh freshman under Wisconsin head coach Paula Wilkins to earn the award. Sessions was one of three freshman voted as a unanimous selection joining Illinois' Vanessa DiBernanrdo and Michigan's Nkem Ezurike.
Along with seven All-Big Ten Freshman honorees, the conference has now crowned two Badgers on the first team and four on the second team in Wisconsin’s four seasons under Wilkins.
The five Badgers to receive a spot on either the first or second All-Big Ten team marks the most Badgers in program history since the 1998 squad also produced five. Flannery and Nosbusch’s first team accolades slates the first time two Badgers were named first team All-Big Ten since Marisa Brown and Kara Kabellis were named to the list in 2005.
Penn State and Ohio State join Wisconsin as the three league schools earning the most first team, second team and All-Freshman team awards this year, with six apiece.
Junior Leigh Williams was among the 11 league recipients (one from each team) to receive the Sportsmanship Award.
