“Penn State and Ohio State present great challenges for us,” head coach Pete Waite said. “We are really focused on the level of play on our side of the net. If we continue the level of play that we’ve been on, we should have some good results.”
UW is in the midst of a six-match stretch in which it plays five top-25 teams as well as a match at Ohio State. The Badgers are 1-7 against ranked teams this season, after winning at No. 24 Northwestern last Saturday.
Wisconsin is 3-3 over its last six matches, including a 2-2 mark to open the second half of the Big Ten season. UW opened the first half of the conference season 0-7.
“This weekend is a great opportunity to continue our improvement,” said Waite. “In the second half of Big Ten play we’ve seen our young group maturing by the week and it’s exciting to see how strong they’re becoming. Every opponent on the road in the Big Ten is tough.”
After losing two straight matches in early October at Purdue and Indiana, the Nittany Lions (21-4, 11-3) have won eight straight. Penn State swept No. 15 Michigan and downed Michigan State 3-1 on the road last weekend.
Senior Blair Brown, a 6-4 right-side hitter, leads the team with 3.90 kills per set. Freshman Deja McClendon, a 6-1 outside hitter, adds 3.37 kills per set.
Senior Arielle Wilson, a 6-3 middle blocker has a team best hitting percentage of .421 while adding 2.71 kills per set. She also leads the team with 1.19 blocks per set.
Senior Fatima Balza, a 6-3 middle blocker, adds 1.16 blocks per set.
Sophomore Kristin Carpenter, a 5-6 setter, puts up 10.84 assists per set. Senior Alyssa D’Errico, a 5-9 libero, leads the team with 3.92 digs per set.
Penn State leads in the all-time series against the Badgers, 35-6, including a 3-0 win over Wisconsin earlier this season. PSU is 19-1 against UW in University Park.
The Badgers will finish up their road swing on Sunday taking on Ohio State at 1 p.m.
