Player and Coach Quotes
Wisconsin vs. Iowa
November 20, 2010
Head Coach Pete Waite
Opening Statement: “Well, I'm really happy with the way we responded after last night's match. We had some different players in there with Julie (Mikaelsen) being out – Mary Ording came in and did a nice job. Then during the match with Nellie (Janelle Gabrielsen) going out, Jessa (Benson) came in and did a nice job. I'm especially happy for our seniors, that they were able to go out on a high note in front of their fans here in the Field House, and all played well and do a nice job and really have fun with the fans.”
On defense keeping Iowa's hitting percentage low: “We talked about our blocking improving and hitting a goal of a certain number of blocks per set before the match, and we pretty much hit it head-on what we wanted to do. And that makes a big difference. At the end, Nellie got some one-on-one blocks, so that was fantastic. Overall, they did a good job there. Defensively, we outdug them by 22 digs and that's pretty big. That says a lot for how our hitters were swinging and how our setters were doing their job, and also how their block and defensive schemes were doing on the other side.”
On performance of Mary Ording: “Mary did a nice job. She's doing well this season, really making some improvements. She is one of the hardest workers on the team. She took some nice swings and she got a block in there, and she came across the court for some tips and played some nice defense. That's what we needed with Julie being out, Mary stepped right in. She'd been preparing for that.”
On everyone playing: “It is nice that they can get out there, contribute and then get the win and feel good about everything. Ashley (Wiedmeyer) has not been playing a lot for us, but we know she's got a good serve-serving from deep in the court-and that's hard for opponents. She also did a nice job on defense. So it was nice with some different people out there, but they play together in practice all the time, and we change the lineup around in practice all the time, so they're very comfortable with each other.”
Senior Allison Wack on differences between last night's match and tonight's match: “Our passing was the big thing. We had one short streak where our passing was off but we had one-on-ones everywhere and that helped alot.”
Senior Allison Wack on playing her last match in the Field House: “It was great. I think, especially winning those games big, it was a team effort. Everyone was contributing. Like (Pete) said, almost everyone got in. It hasn't really hit me yet that it was our last game.”
Senior Kim Kuzma on playing her last match in the Field House: “It's hit me a little bit. I was crying pretty much the whole match. No, I was good when I was actually playing. It was definitely nice to get the win. Winning obviously is a lot more fun than losing. Everyone did a great job tonight too, and it was all around a good effort, and it's just so much more fun to play like that. Not only win, but play like that.”
Senior Jessa Benson on playing her last match in the Field House: “Just what Al(lison Wack) said about everyone being able to get in, that was awesome. To get the win was amazing for (it being) our last home match. I told these guys before the game even started that it hasn't hit me yet, and I don't think it will until it comes time to come back for spring training and we're not coming to the Field House for practice every day.”
