LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Postgame quotes from Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan and senior forward Jon Leuer after Wisconsin's 50-35 win over Manhattan in the first round of the 2010 Old Spice Classic.
Bo Ryan
"If I tried to explain it away, I'd probably just waste your time. 80-90% of the shots were feet set, good release. It's not like we were taking fade aways. They were going to make us make some shots. We've faced teams like that before and Barry's (Rohrsesn) team did a great job of saying, 'alright we're not going to give you this, but if you're going to take that, you're going to have to hit this shot,' early on we didn't. Thank goodness it's 40 minute game though."
"I think we did a couple things on hustle plays. A teammate dives out of bounds, takes out a couple of chairs at our bench, saves the ball, we hit a three. Jordan Taylor in one of those possessions makes a great steal and save going out of bounds down past our bench, we score on that one. There were a couple other opportunities around the basket, the ball was maybe tipped and we ended up getting it and scoring. So what we did is we scored in some different ways."
"A lot of it was us creating the opportunity offensively and then at the end we were going to take care of our possessions, we weren't looking to do anything crazy to give them more shots at the other end, especially the way the rim looked to our guys. As small as it looked, we weren't going to chance that. We made them chase us a little bit at the end."
"In order to be successful though in a tournament, whether it's a post season-type tournament or pre-conference or conference tournament or NCAA tournament or anything, you've got to survive these kinds of games. And then when you get to the next one, you've got to make sure the same thing doesn't happen twice."
"If you're getting good looks and aren't hitting shots, then you need to hit shots, you to get to the free throw line. You need to do those things in some other way or have your defense create some offense."
(On Josh Gasser)
"He did three things against some pretty good athletes and pretty good players and I said you know what he can play."
(On Jon Leuer)
"He was active. He stuck his nose in there got his hands on the ball and was able to hold onto the ball. If you're there, something can happen. If you're not there, it can't happen. So he was active in getting into position, probably because the way we were shooting the ball, it was going to miss."
Jon Leuer
"First half, like Coach said, we were getting good shots. On a couple of my shots I thought I could have done differently, I was floating on some of them. I didn't go straight up and down."
"In the second half, we just got in to more of a rhythm offensively and it wasn't just me that was able to knock down some shots. But when the team is unselfish, like we are, and move the ball, we're always going to cut hard and read the defense and that's how we were able to get shots. I was able to get into a rhythm too."
