MADISON, Wis. -- A pair of athletes with ties to the Wisconsin men's cross country program are set to represent Canada at Sunday's IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Poland.
UW freshman Mohammed Ahmed and former Badger Simon Bairu are both in Bydgoszcz, Poland, to compete in the world championships, which are set for Sunday.
Ahmed, fresh off a silver-medal finish at the 2010 North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Cross Country Championships on March 6, leads the Canadian delegation for the men's junior race, which will cover 8 kilometers.
Bairu, a two-time NCAA champion while running for the Badgers, is Canada's lone entry in the 12-kilometer senior men's race. In his most recent outing, Bairu held off American record-holder Ryan Hall to win the Rock and Roll Arizona Half Marathon in Januay.
Ahmed's junior race is set for 6:30 a.m. Central time on Sunday, with Bairu's senior race scheduled to go off at 8:10 a.m.
