MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men’s rowing team completed a successful home showing against Minnesota and the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Lake Mendota while also wrapping up the first day of competition at the Stanford Invitational in Redwood City, Calif., this Saturday.
Badger boats won all of their races against Minnesota and MSOE, taking both first and second in every event they competed in.
In their most notable race, the Wisconsin third and fourth varsity boats defeated Minnesota by 32.2 and 24.4 seconds, respectively. The third varsity boat consisted of coxswain Michael Patinkin, Sean Tuffy, Will Porter, Dan Agostinacchio, Mark Jaffee, Daniel Moore, Brian Whyms, Dave Lucas and John Ludders, while coxswain James Neitzel, Cory Hatton, Anders Corbett, Matt Masterson, Ryan Blasiak, Christopher Stiles, Brad Betts, Connor Cahill and Tim Wartinbee manned the Wisconsin fourth varsity boat.
Strong winds across Lake Mendota forced the competition to be relocated to the opposite side of the lake from the University of Wisconsin campus, along the shores of Governor Nelson State Park.
While half of the team was tested by the weather on the home front, the rest of the crew battled top-ranked teams on the west coast. Wisconsin faced No. 2 Cal Saturday morning and No. 18 Oregon State in the afternoon.
UW tallied a 2-1 record against Oregon State, with the varsity eight boat of coxswain Tim Altimari, Tim Aghai, Roger Huffman, Matt Lojkovic, Max Goff, Luke Juckett, Steve Dudek, Daniel Gengler and Sam Hoidal winning by 21.1 seconds.
The second varsity eight, seating coxswain Matt Francsis, Michael Kaufman, Zach Rodenbough, Paul Williams, James Hadar, Jack Yeksigian, Andrew Gallagher, Ryan Thompson and Eric Duhon, gained a 7.3 second edge for the win over Oregon State.
The Badgers put forth an impressive effort against second-ranked Cal. In the morning races, the Wisconsin men’s varsity finished just 2.8 seconds behind the Bears, while the second varsity eight trailed by only 4.6 seconds.
Wisconsin will compete tomorrow against No. 12 Stanford at the Stanford Invitational. Check back to UWBadgers.com for results.
