Madison, Wis. - UW Sophomore Thomas Welk of Bismarck, ND, qualified for the U.S. Amateur Public Links tournament on June 19 with a 141 at the Washington County Golf Course in Hartford, Wis.
Welk will tee it up with 156 other golfers on July 12-17 at the 7,195-yard par 71 Bryan Park Golf and Conference Center in Greensboro, NC.
A red-shirt freshman last season, Welk played in four spring tournaments for the Badgers averaging 77.0 through 13 rounds. His best tournament finish was a tie for 37th at the Crooked Stick Invt. (T37, 76-78-78=232). He has career bests of 77-151-230 and tied for 44th at the Big Ten Tournament with a 308.
The U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship has been an unqualified success since its inception in 1922, giving exposure to many public-course players who otherwise might not have an opportunity to compete in a national championship.
