MADISON, Wis. -- Every day this week leading up to the induction ceremony, one of the seven members of the University of Wisconsin Athletics Hall of Fame class of 2010 will be celebrated. The Hall of Fame induction is Friday, Sept. 10 outside the Camp Randall Memorial Sports Center. The 6 p.m. ceremony is open to the public. Today's celebrant is men's hockey player Theran Welsh.
The WCHA's all-time leading scorer on defense, Theran Welsh was a 1980 First-Team All-American and two-time All-WCHA Second-Team selection. Named to the 1981 NCAA All-Tournament Team, the Weldon, Saskatchewan native assisted the Badgers with their third NCAA championship that season.
Wisconsin's third-leading scorer all-time with 228 points in 161 career games, Welsh's 194 assists are the most for a WCHA defenseman and also rank second among all league players. He also ranks second among all WCHA players with 147 career assist in WCHA contests. His 54 assists in 1978-79 are the third most for a WCHA defenseman and his 61 points that same season rank seventh among league rear guards.
In addition to WCHA records, Welsh can find his name scattered among UW's records. His 194 career assists are the most in school history. The helpful Welsh also owns Badger marks for single-season assists among freshmen (45) and sophomores (54), and ranks third for juniors (51) and fifth for senior Badgers (44). His 55 points as a rookie in 1977-78 share fourth among freshmen in school history.
In addition to his outstanding assist and point totals, Welsh proved his consistency as winner of the team's Dr. Joseph Coyne Most Consistent Player award during the 1978-79 season.
Still a part of Badger hockey currently as a color analyst for Wisconsin Public Television's tape-delayed broadcasts, Welsh is a CPA and currently works for SVA as Director of Construction Group Services.
The members of the class of 2010 include football coach Barry Alvarez (1990-2005), football and men's track and field Dan Lanphear (1957-59), men's track and field athlete Dick Houden (1947), football player Don Davey (1987-91), wrestler Donny Pritzlaff (1997-2001) and women's swimmer Ellen Stonebraker (1997-2001).
