The 5-7 freshman guard from Fort Wayne, Ind., has played in six games for the Badgers this season, scoring her first career points in Wisconsin’s 68-51 win over Milwaukee. Gorman finished her high school career with 1,604 points, 688 assists and 478 steals. She was named all-conference four times, all-area all four years and all-State three times.
How is playing basketball in college different from high school?
It is a lot more physical and the game is faster paced. Like coach always says, it is graduate level. You really have to pay attention or else you will just be out there lost.
What have you learned about the game since joining the team?
I have learned that there is a lot more to the game than just being out there and playing. If you don’t know your opponent’s favorite moves or you don’t know the scouting report, you won’t have a very good chance of winning. It is all about knowing your opponent and executing your offense.
What improvements have you made to your game?
I still have to improve on being vocal. But ball handling is a big thing. If you can’t handle the ball, you can’t be out there. Also vision, you have to be able to see everything that is open to be a point guard.
Describe what it is like running the offense.
I have always been a point guard, since I have been so little. It is a lot of pressure, but I enjoy the pressure. I wouldn’t want to be any other position on the floor. When you go, the team goes. It’s a big deal and it is something I take pride in.
Is your size an advantage or disadvantage in the college game?
I would always like to be a couple inches taller, but I can deal with it.
How has the adjustment to college life been?
I am very family oriented, so it has been hard being away from my family, but I have a family here now. It’s been easier to adjust to since we are all so close.
As the oldest of four, what has it been like to be the first kid to leave the house?
We like to Skype each other and talk on the phone a lot. Keeping in contact is a big deal with my family. My little sister calls me all the time and when she calls me, I get a big smile and she makes my day brighter.
Will your family be able to make it to any games?
They have made it to a couple games, but since it is so far away, they can’t always make it.
