Carlini, Chapman named AVCA All-Region

MADISON, Wis. – The awards keep piling up for the Wisconsin volleyball team. The Badgers landed two players on the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Northeast All-Region team, announced Tuesday. Freshman Lauren Carlini and junior Ellen Chapman were named to the all-region team with Carlini also being named the region’s freshman of the year.
They are the first Badgers named to the all-region team since 2007 while Carlini is UW’s first regional freshman of the year since the award was begun in 1999.
Carlini and Chapman will now be placed on the list of athletes up for All-America honors, which will be announced Dec. 18.
Carlini, the 2013 Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Year, was also named to the 2013 All-Big Ten team. The 6-2 setter runs the Badger offense, putting up 10.99 assists per set, which ranks third in the Big Ten. She ranks second on the team with 28 service aces and 2.84 digs per set. Carlini has a team-best 19 double-doubles on the season, which is the best among national freshmen. The Aurora, Ill., native also ranks third on the team with 0.79 blocks per set.
Chapman, a 6-4 outside hitter, is UW’s top offensive threat, averaging 3.47 kills per set, which ranks seventh in the Big Ten. She has double-figure kills in a team-leading 30 matches, including 17 straight matches from Oct. 2 – Nov. 27. The Glenview, Ill., native also leads the Badgers with 29 service aces, or 0.22 per set, and ranks third on the team with a .259 hitting percentage.
The 12th-seeded Badgers (25-9) advanced to NCAA regional play and will take on 16th-ranked Florida State (26-7) on Friday at 4 p.m. at the State Farm Center in Champaign, Ill. The Badgers and Seminoles will be followed by No. 18 Illinois (18-14) hosting No. 19 Purdue (22-11) at 6 p.m.
Semifinal winners advance to the regional final on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
