MADISON, Wis. – After a surprising run to the NCAA championship match, the Wisconsin volleyball team ended the 2013 season ranked second in the final American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 poll, released Monday. The Badgers also ended the 2000 season ranked second in the AVCA poll after losing to Nebraska in the NCAA championship match.
Wisconsin finished the season 28-10, falling to top-ranked Penn State 3-1 in the NCAA championship match. The Nittany Lions (34-2) wrapped up the season as the unanimous No. 1 pick in the poll, picking up all 60 first-place votes.
The Badgers started the year receiving votes in the preseason coaches’ poll in August. They steadily moved up through the season, earning a then-high ranking of 13th on Nov. 25. It was the first season since 2007 that Wisconsin has been ranked or receiving votes in the coaches’ poll all season long.
In addition to Penn State and Wisconsin, the Big Ten Conference had eight teams ranked or receiving votes in the final poll. Nebraska (26-7) finished the season ranked seventh while Purdue (23-12) was eighth. Minnesota (28-7) rounded out the top-10 teams at 10th. Michigan State (23-12) came in 14th while Illinois (18-15) was 16th. Michigan received votes in the final poll.
