CHICAGO, Ill. --Lessons are best learned when little or nothing is at stake. The Badgers learned a few valuable lessons on Monday evening in their first action of 2013, an exhibition at the University of Illinois-Chicago.
Despite drawing first blood just before the intermission, the Badgers were unable to fight off a pesky Flames squad, as UW fell 2-1 at Flames Field.
Fast Facts | • Badgers conceded first goal since spring | • Prince netted only score for Badgers | • GK Beyers recorded 2 saves in 1st half shutout | |
The Badgers, who had not conceded a goal all spring, nearly clawed their way back into the match but were unable to convert on a couple of clean looks at the goal in the waning minutes of the match.
UW attempted eight shots all game and got their cleanest look on net during the final minute of the first half. Chris Prince capitalized on a throw in, chipping in the ball from five yards out and giving the Badgers the 1-0 lead just seconds before the intermission.
It took nearly 70 minutes but the Flames finally netted the equalizer in the 67th minute on a score from Jorge Alvarez. Evan Trychta secured the game-winning goal 10 minutes later, scoring on a rebound that was kicked off the glove of UW keeper Max Jentsch.
Casey Beyers began the match in goal, recording a pair of saves and blanking UIC in the first 45 minutes. Jentsch replaced Beyers midway through the second half and despite tallying one save, gave up the game's final two scores.
With just four days of training under their belts, UW will regroup and prepare for their final exhibition match of 2013, as they welcome Green Bay to McClimon on Sat., Aug. 24. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. (CT)
