MADISON, Wis. -- Following a stellar showing at the 2014 Big Ten Championship meet in Iowa City, Iowa, the Wisconsin women's cross country team once again moved up in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country National Coaches Poll for the third time this season, checking in at No. 6, the organization announced Tuesday.
After a large jump in the rankings following an impressive performance at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational last month, the now No. 6 Wisconsin women's cross country team enjoys its highest ranking since the first week of the 2007 season. At Sunday's Big Ten meet, Wisconsin bested last week's No. 4 Michigan, who fell to No. 8 in this week's national rankings, while finishing runner-up to No. 1 Michigan State.
With four runners placing in the top-12, the Badgers were able to compete with Michigan State for the majority of the race. UW's Sarah Disanza ran neck and neck with Michigan State's Leah O'Connor, who ended up winning by less than two seconds. Michigan State placed all five runners within the top-11, while Wisconsin had four of its top-five runners in the top-12.
"This is very exciting for our women who have bought into our team oriented mission," Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Mick Byrne said. "We raised the bar as far as what we expected from them in training and competition and they have responded with passion. It is awesome to see them race with poise, confidence and belief.
"They understand the rich tradition of our women's program and are determined to add to the rich tradition."
Wisconsin will showcase their talents next at the Badger Invite, hosted at the Zimmer Championship Course on Nov. 8, 2014. The race is set to begin at 11 a.m. (CT).
