MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 21 Wisconsin men's soccer team began its 2014 preseason on a high note, defeating the University of Illinois-Chicago, 1-0, in an exhibition match at the McClimon Soccer Complex on Sunday.
Tom Barlow gave the Badgers an early 1-0 lead with a goal in the 28th minute, which proved the difference as UW went on to shut out UIC and earn the victory. Barlow's first action as a Badger, the freshman made a nice run to get behind defenders, then took an assist from Skyler Felt and converted by scoring bottom left with a one-on-one opportunity.
"I'm not sure who exactly played me, but I made a run, then Felt hit me through and it was just me and the goalie and I was able to score," Barlow said.

The high-energy offense of the Flames gave UIC a number of scoring opportunities of its own. The exhibition split into three, 30-minute periods, the Flames recorded seven corner kicks and seven shots over the course of the match. The Badgers totaled just three corner kicks, but outshot UIC 10-to-7.
Despite multiple chances to capitalize, the Flames were held scoreless due to a solid defensive effort from the Badgers and 80-plus minutes of shutout work from freshman goaltender Adrian Remeniuk.
A total of 19 players saw action over the course of the match, including nine freshmen.
"We had a great crowd out here and that helped us, no question," UW head coach John Trask said of the 870 in attendance. "It was a good showing today against a good UIC team. They beat us in exhibition last year at their place and beat us again this past spring. It was good for these young guys to figure out a way to beat them. I'm big on that.
"Compliments to UIC and their staff. I wish them the best of luck the rest of the way. We'll move on now to Creighton, who is going to be another excellent test for us."
Wisconsin travels to face Creighton on Aug. 22 in its second of three exhibitions this preseason. The Badgers wrap up their preseason with a trip to face defending national champion Notre Dame on Aug. 2.
