Darling places third at USA 5K Championships

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Former Wisconsin track and cross country standout Maverick Darling continued his success on the road circuit, finishing third at the USA 5K Championships Sunday in Providence.
The Ovid, Michigan, native finished in 13 minutes, 57.5 seconds, behind only Diego Estrada and German Fernandez. Estrada won the race in 13:56.4, while Fernandez was second in 13:57.0.
It mark’s Darling’s second third-place showing at a USA Running Circuit event this year, as he was third at the USA 7 Mile Championships this summer in Iowa.
Darling enjoyed a remarkable cross country career for the Badgers. After redshirting the 2008 season, Darling was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2009. From 2009-12, Darling earned two All-America honors, three first-team All-Region selections and four first-team All-Big Ten awards.
Darling was equally accomplished as a distance runner in track, collecting five All-Big Ten awards, two Big Ten championships and three All-America honors.
