MADISON, Wis.- Wisconsin improved to sixth place to conclude the Badger Invitational on Tuesday scoring the second best 18-hole team score with a 292 to total 297-304-292--893 at University Ridge Golf Course.
UW Coach said of his team's improving finish, "This final round was so important for us in so many ways. We had some guys step today in Jack Watson and Thomas O'Bryan at a time when we needed to salvage the event in regards to a decent team result. Eddie Wajda continues to be a solid performer as a freshman. Conditions were brutal today and having the second best team score of the day was very solid! Hopefully we use today as a spring board into the Erin Hills event."
Sam Houston State led the field for the whole tournament and took first place with a 7-over 871. Scott Fernandez of Iowa Sate was tournament medalist after scoring a 66 in the third round today, which is one stroke behind the current 18-hole record with a 3-under par 75-72-66-213. That score tied for the fifth best score at University Ridge. He was one of only two players to finish under par for the tournament.
UW was led by Jack Watson and Thomas O'Bryan who finished 3-over par to tie for 10th. For the second time this tournament, Watson recorded and matched his career 18-hole score of 70. It was O'Bryans best tournament finish as a Badger.
Eddie Wajda III and individual Matt Ross closed out the tournament with a 9-over 225, both of them remaining consistent throughout the three rounds.
Both scoring 228, individuals Payton Taylor and Michael Abrahamson placed tied for 37th.
Seniors Rob Jacobsen and Zach Balit scored uncharacteristically high, recording a 231 and 235 respectively. In the Wolverine Intercollegiate, Jacobsen snagged a Badger-best 212 and Balit scored a 218.
Coming up for the Badgers is the Erin Hills Intercollegiate in Hartford Wisconsin from Sunday to Tuesday, Oct. 5-7.
