FAIRFAX, Va. -- Freshman Mark Segbers scored his third goal of the season, but it came in the 89th minute and was too little too late for the Wisconsin men's soccer team, which fell 2-1 to George Mason in Fairfax, Virginia, on Friday night.
Segbers tallied his third goal in the past two games, but it was not enough for the Badgers (1-2-0) who fell behind 2-0 and lost by a one-goal margin for the second time this season.
"We were in another tight match against a well-coached team in George Mason," UW head coach John Trask said. "It was a great environment for a game and a good crowd on hand. We were well in it at halftime, 0-0, but we made some mistakes that hurt ourselves."
"At the end of the day, we need to play mature soccer. We have to find a way to be stronger in close games and find that needed goal in situations like these on the road."

Segbers was able to help UW finally break through and score in the 89th minute for his team-leading third goal this year. The St. Louis, Missouri, native scored two goals last Sunday--including the first of his career--to spark a 4-0 home victory for UW over Xavier.
The Patriots (3-0-0) came up with the game's first goal just minutes out of the halftime break, as Henning Dirks scored his second goal of the season in the 48th minute. After UW goalkeeper Adrian Remeniuk had the ball stolen, Dirks took advantage and was able to score in the lower left corner from inside the box to give GM an early lead.
Timi Mulgrew scored for the fifth time this year and pushed George Mason ahead 2-0 in the 80th minute, heading in the ball on a long pass from goalkeeper Steffen Kraus.
Segbers was able to get the Badgers on the board in the 89th minute, scoring unassisted after gathering the ball in the box and then working around GM goalkeeper Steffen Kraus for the score.
In goal for UW, Remeniuk faced eight shots from the Patriots and made two saves for UW.
The Badgers as a group recorded seven shots and earned three corner kicks.
"We're going to move forward and play an extremely talented Georgetown squad on Sunday," Trask said. "We'll see what our team is made of and how we respond."
Wisconsin finishes its two-game road trip by traveling to Washington, D.C., where it will face No. 9 Georgetown on Sunday.
