MADISON, Wis. -- Arguably the most prolific scorer in Wisconsin women's soccer history, forward Cara Walls will take her talents to the next level after being selected by the Chicago Red Stars with the 23rd overall pick in the 2015 National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) College Draft on Friday.
Walls becomes the first player in program history to be drafted into the NWSL, which was founded in 2012.
"When I heard I was selected, I was just extremely excited and thankful," Walls said. "I've played with and against so many awesome players in college and know how many of them also want this opportunity. I've long dreamed of becoming a professional and can't believe it's actually happening. My goal is to give it my all in training and prove that I can make an impact when I'm entered into a game."
Scoring goals is something Walls has always had a knack for, and last season was no exception. The Wauwatosa native found the net 14 times for Wisconsin in 2014 en route to First-Team All-Big Ten and Third-Team NSCAA All-Great Lakes Region accolades. Wisconsin's leading goal scorer all four years of her collegiate career, Walls also led UW with 28 points on her 14 goals in 2014. Six of Walls' goals were game-winners, which tied her with teammate Kodee Williams for best in the Big Ten.
Walls finished her accomplished UW career tied for second in career goals (42) and as the program's career record holder for multi-goal games (10). Her 14 goals last season tied for fourth-most in UW history.
Walls was instrumental in leading Wisconsin to one of the program's most successful seasons at 19-3-2 and a No. 4 seed in the 2014 NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament. After winning the 2014 Big Ten Tournament Championship -- UW's first since 2005 -- Walls and the Badgers advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament. UW's 19 wins in 2014 were the most in program history and, coupled with just three losses, also set a program record for win percentage (.869).
