Junior midfielder scored the game-winning goal to clinch a title share
MADISON, Wis. – Micaela Powers picked a great time to score the first game-winning goal of her career. With Wisconsin and Maryland locked in a scoreless tie, Powers scored the game-winner in the 81st minute and not only clinched a victory, but also a share of the Big Ten regular season title for the Badgers. For her late-game heroics, Powers was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week by the conference office on Tuesday.
The Beavercreek, Ohio, native came off the bench and played just 20 minutes against Maryland last Saturday night, but made each minute count. She finished with four shots, including three shots on goal, and tallied the game-winner to lock up at least a share of Wisconsin's first Big Ten regular season title since 1994.
It was the second goal of Powers' career and her first game-winning goal.
The performance of Powers also helped the Badgers win their eighth straight game, which matches the fifth-longest streak in school history.
Powers becomes the first Badger to be named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week since teammate Kinley McNicoll earned the accolade last season on Sept. 9.
Wisconsin hosts Northwestern on Wednesday at 7 p.m. (CT) for its regular-season finale. With a win or a tie, the Badgers can clinch the Big Ten title outright and also secure themselves the top overall seed and home-field advantage for the 2015 Big Ten Tournament, which begins Sunday.
