Wisconsin suffers its first loss of the season
GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The top-ranked Wisconsin women's hockey team saw its historic start to the 2015-16 season come to an end on Friday as No. 9 North Dakota bested the Badgers, 3-0, at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
Wisconsin (18-1-0, 12-1-0-0 WCHA) suffered its first loss of the season after winning its first 18 games, which was the second-longest winning streak in program history.
The Badgers managed to outshoot the Fighting Hawks (11-6-2, 8-5-2-1 WCHA) 26-23, but could only muster three shots on net in the final 20 minutes.
UND scored with just under eight minutes left in the first as North Dakota's Layla Marvin scored on a power play, snapping a streak of 45-straight penalties killed by the Cardinal and White.
Four minutes later, UND's Vilma Tanskanen beat UW netminder Ann-Renee Desbiens to double the UND advantage.
The Badgers controlled play in the second, outshooting UND 15-2, but couldn't get the puck past UND goaltender Shelby Amsley-Benzie, who ended the game with 26 saves.
The Fighting Hawks tacked on an insurance goal early in the third period as Becca Kohler pounced on a rebound and slid it into the UW net to round out the scoring.
Desbiens ended the game with 20 saves.
Wisconsin killed three of its four infractions and continues to lead the NCAA in penalty killing with a .962 clip.
Despite giving up three goals for the first time this year, UW still leads the country in scoring defense, allowing an average of 0.63 goals per game.
UND and UW meet on Saturday at 4 p.m. as the Badgers look to split their final series of the 2015 calendar year.Â
