Badgers begin Texas Invitational with strong relay finishes

Men’s ‘A’ squad notches runner-up finish
AUSTIN, Texas – In the first day of competition at the Texas Invitational, the Wisconsin men's and women's swimming teams flourished in the 800-yard freestyle relay, as the Badgers placed four of six relays in the top ten altogether.
The men's 'A' relay garnered the highest placing of the night, finishing runner-up in the distance relay. The team of Cannon Clifton, Matthew Hutchins, Sean Maloney and Brett Pinfold finished just behind the Arizona men's 'A' squad in a time of 6 minutes, 24.36 seconds.
The relay team of Jacob Lamparella, Todd McCarthy, Chris Sheaffer and Austin Byrd combined to make up the Wisconsin 'C' relay, which finished sixth overall with a time of 6:35.13.
The men's 'B' relay team wasn't far behind in eighth place, as Ryan Stack, Anthony Lyons, Nathan Mueller and Michael Sullivan combined for a time of 6:37.05 in the 800-yard event.
In the women's distance relay race, the Wisconsin 'A' team of Dana Grindall, Danielle Valley, Emmy Sehmann and Chase Kinney finished sixth with a time of 7:13.85. The Arizona women's 'A' squad won the event with a time of 7:01.50.
The team of Jess Unicomb, Grace Tierney, Ariana Saghafi and Maddi Tew made up UW's 'B' team, which finished 11th in a time of 7:20.06.
The Wisconsin 'C' team of Madison Blaydes, Emily Kosten, Rachel Johnson and Molly Manchon finished up the event for the Badgers in 17th place with a time of 7:33.60.
Wisconsin gets right back at it tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. (CT) and begins the first preliminary session of the Texas Invitational, as swimmers have the chance to qualify for the finals session tomorrow night, which begin at 6 p.m.
