
Pair of Badgers earn weekly Big Ten swimming recognition

Hutchins named men's Swimmer of the Week, Unicomb women's Co-Freshman of the Week
MADISON, Wis. – Following big performances at last week's Texas Invitational, Wisconsin swimmers Matt Hutchins and Jess Unicomb were named Big Ten Men's Swimmer of the Week and Big Ten Women's Co-Freshman of the Week, respectively, as announced by the conference Wednesday.
The third Big Ten Swimmer of the Week honor of his career, Hutchins finished in the top five in the 1,650-yard freestyle (first), 800-yard freestyle relay (second), 500-yard freestyle (third) and 200-yard freestyle (fifth) among elite competition in Austin, Texas, last week.
Hutchins won the 1,650-yard freestyle in a school-record time of 14 minutes, 38.14 seconds, which is an NCAA automatic qualifying mark and currently ranks fifth-fastest in the nation.
The Christchurch, New Zealand, native also recorded NCAA provisional qualifying times in the 200-yard freestyle (1:35.77 in prelims; 1:35.95 in finals), 500-yard freestyle (4:15.64) and 800-yard freestyle relay (6:24.36).
His times in the 500-yard freestyle and 800-yard freestyle relay currently rank No. 6 and No. 7 in the nation, respectively.
Unicomb earned her second career Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor after she had a standout week for the Wisconsin women's swimming team. The Gold Coast, Australia, native posted top-10 finishes in seven different events at the Texas Invitational: the 50-yard freestyle (22.47); 100-yard backstroke (53.79); 200-yard backstroke (1:59.04); 200-yard freestyle relay (1:30.12); 400-yard freestyle relay (3:18.27); 200-yard medley relay (1:38.82); and 400-yard medley relay (3:35.85).
Her times in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard backstroke are NCAA provisional qualifying. She also recorded personal-best times in the 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard individual medley.
Wisconsin resumes its dual meet schedule Jan. 12, 2016, with a road test against USC in Los Angeles.
