MADISON, Wis. -- Junior Matt Ross, who surged to the fore front in team scoring to close the spring season, was named the Big Ten Conference Sportsmanship Award winner for Wisconsin by the conference office on Tuesday.
Ross closed out the season finishing second on the team in scoring in three of the last four tournaments. Ross tied the 18th best 18-hole score with his 66 at the HYX Hoosier Invitational with his best tournament finish, a tie for eighth with career marks of 74-66-73--213.
Ross played in all but four rounds this season saving his best for end of the spring season. His season average of 74.24 was a career-best and ranked fourth on the team. The Hartland, Wisconsin, native will be counted on as a team leader as the lone senior next year.
Ross was a major contributor to a Badger team that turned the corner with improved performances in 2014-15. The men's golf season ended on April 26 with a tie for fifth at the Big Ten Championships, but it took some major steps in the right direction all season long.
Not only did they record their first tournament title since 2006 at the NXY Hoosier Invitational, they also tallied the best Big Ten Championship finish since 2007, in which they tied for fifth out of 14 conference teams this year with an eighth-best all-time 72-hole score of 1183. UW was 10th last season.
As a team, the Cardinal and White tallied the second-best season average (293.25) coming just .03 strokes from a new record.
