GOLD RIVER, Calif. --- With the second day of the 2015 NCAA Rowing Championships in the books, the No. 12 Wisconsin women's rowing team put itself in position for a top-12 finish with its results Saturday on Lake Natoma.

"We had a good morning overall," head coach Bebe Bryans explained. "The varsity eight started us out with a solid win in their C/D semi, and the second varsity eight threw it all out in the first half of their A/B semi to stay with the pack of a strong A/B semifinal."

In the varsity eight, the Badgers took 6:37.559 to reach the 2000-meter finish line and claim the top spot in its C/D semifinal. Eighth-ranked Yale finished second in 6:40.832, while Notre Dame was third in 6:43.941. Those three crews will race in Sunday's third-level final for places 13-18 in the event.

The second varsity eight was UW's lone boat in an A/B semifinal, with a chance to reach Sunday's grand final, but Ohio State grabbed the top spot in the race with a 6:32.249 and Washington was close on its heels with a 6:34.234. California ended up with the final spot in the grand final when they crossed the finish line in 6:38.734. Wisconsin ended up in sixth, but less than a second behind fourth-place Texas.

As a result, the Badgers will race in Sunday's petite final for places 6-12 in the second varsity eight.

"The petite final in that race will be as much of a barn burner as the grand final and it will be an exciting race for sure," Bryans remarked.

Like the varsity eight, the varsity four will compete in the third-level on Sunday for places 12-18 after its second-place performance in its C/D semifinal. Indiana won the race in 7:31.205, but UW's 7:34.079 got them second and one of the three qualifying spots for the third-level final. Navy was third for the final spot.

"The four had a much better performance today and will have some momentum going into tomorrow's C final," Bryans said.

"We are getting faster as the regatta goes along, so we're looking forward to our best performances on finals day."

Wisconsin begins its final day of the season on Sunday at 10:24 a.m. CT with the second varsity eight petite final against Indiana, Virginia, Michigan, Stanford and Texas. At 11:55 a.m., UW's varsity four will race in the third-level final against Indiana, Harvard, USC, Navy and Gonzaga. The Badgers close out the season at 12:35 p.m. with the third-level final of the varsity eight against Gonzaga, USC, Yale, UCF and Notre Dame.
