Badgers win 800 freestyle relay at National Championships

SAN ANTONIO --Badgers stood atop the podium to end the fourth day of the 2015 Phillips 66 National Championships, as Ryan Stack, Cannon Clifton, Matt Hutchins and Nathan Mueller won the 800-meter men's freestyle relay in San Antonio, Texas on Sunday.
Stack, Clifton, Hutchins and Mueller combined to post a time of seven minutes, 23.37 seconds and won gold in the day's final event. Stack led off with a 1:51.87 split, which also marked a new Olympic trial cut for the Kailua, Hawaii native. Clifton followed in 1:50.02, then Hutchins clocked in with UW's fastest split (1:48.51) and Mueller swam the anchor leg in 1:52.97 to close out the victory..
California finished runner-up in 7:25:38, followed by Villanova in third place at 7:25.78, Kentucky in fourth (7:27.59) and Louisvile in fifth (7:28.86).
Competing individually earlier in the day, Hutchins finished 17th in the men's 1500-meter freestyle with a time of 15:32.06. Sean Maloney also competed in the event, placing 68th (16:41.28).
Clifton earned a 20th-place showing during preliminaries of the men's 100-meter freestyle with his time of 50.12 seconds. Not too far behind was teammate Brett Pinfold in 29th place at 50.48.
Pinfold also swam in prelims of the 200-meter individual medley, finishing 44th in 2:04.61.
In the women's 200-meter butterfly, Dana Grindall placed 43rd with a time of 2:16.41.
Two Badgers competed in the women's 800-meter freestyle, as Jenny Holtzen finished 46th (8:56.20) and Danielle Valley was 48th (8:56.33).
The fifth and final day of competition at the 2015 Phillips 66 National Championships is set for Monday.
