Outstanding performance against Rutgers nabs senior weekly award
MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin women's soccer senior Rose Lavelle has had a collegiate career that places her among the best to ever put on the Badger uniform. Her resume received another accolade on Thursday, as she was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week following her two-goal performance that led Wisconsin to come-from-behind win over Rutgers on Wednesday night.
Despite Rutgers (9-3-6 overall, 4-2-5 Big Ten) getting on the board first in the 40th minute, Lavelle came through clutch for Wisconsin (8-4-7, 5-2-4) in the second half and tied the game up in the 74th minute.
The midfielder wasn't done. It took only minutes for Lavelle to strike again, as she scored the go-ahead goal in the 83rd minute by rocketing in a shot from about 20 yards out to put the Badgers up, 2-1, and clinch the late come-from-behind victory.
With her standout performance, Lavelle notched a pair of season milestones, becoming the first Badger this season to score two goals in a game and also the first to record four points in a game this year. It also marked the first game-winning goal for Lavelle this season.
Lavelle earned her first weekly conference award since being honored as Big Ten Freshman of the Week in 2013. It is the first Offensive Player of the Week award of her career.
With its win over Rutgers, the Badgers were awarded the No. 5 seed in the Big Ten tournament. Wisconsin travels to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to face the fourth-seeded Michigan Wolverines on Sunday at 3 p.m. CT.
