Senior midfielder among nation’s best for top award
MADISON, Wis. – Senior midfielder Rose Lavelle has proven to be one of the best to ever wear a Wisconsin women's soccer uniform. Having already made her mark in UW's record book, she accomplished yet another feat on Friday, becoming the program's first top-30 finalist for the Senior CLASS Award.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
Lavelle, a Cinicinatti, Ohio, native, was a 2016 first-team All-American and was recognized as one of 15 semifinalists for last year's Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy. She became just the second player in school history to be named a semifinalist for collegiate soccer's most prestigious individual award.
Lavelle became the first Badger to win Big Ten Midfielder of the Year in 2015. She has started in all 14 games this season and is averaging a team-high 3.71 shots per game. Lavelle leads the team in shots (52), shots on goal (23) and assists (3). Additionally, she ranks second on the team in points (7) and goals (2).
Of the 60 candidates, 29 have grade-point averages of 3.5 or higher, 13 are returning All-Americans and 12 are on the preseason watch list for the MAC Hermann Trophy. Outside of academics and athletics, all candidates also have been consistently involved in community service on their campus or in their communities.
Each of the two candidate classes will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one male candidate and one female candidate.
The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2016 NCAA Men's and Women's College Cup® championships in December.
