
Wisconsin takes on Marquette in NCAA first round

In-state rivalry on tap for big dance
MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin women's soccer team is excited to host in-state rival Marquette for the first round of the NCAA tournament on Friday night at 7 p.m. at the McClimon Soccer Complex. It will be the first time Wisconsin has hosted since welcoming DePaul in 2014 where the Badgers came out with the 2-0 win. UW has hosted 10 NCAA tournament games at the McClimon Complex and holds a 7-2-1 record.

STARTING XI
1. For the first time since 2014, the Wisconsin women's soccer team has earned a bid in the NCAA tournament. The Badgers (8-4-8 overall) will host 1-94 rival Marquette (12-7-2) in the first round of the tournament on Friday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. at the McClimon Soccer Complex.
2. Wisconsin head coach Paula Wilkins makes her 11th appearance in the NCAA tournament as a head coach and fifth with the Badgers.
3. The Badgers have battled through 10 overtime games and 188 minutes of overtime.
4. The Wisconsin women's soccer program bowed out of the Big Ten Tournament after dropping their opening game at Michigan. UW tied the game, 1-1, but lost in penalty kicks, 4-2.
5. Lavelle leads the team in goals this season with five and also leads the team in points (14) along with Micaela Powers, who has tallied 14 points.
6. Senior Rose Lavelle has proven to be one of the best to ever wear a Wisconsin women's soccer uniform. Having already made her mark in UW's record book, she accomplished yet another feat on Friday, becoming the program's first top-30 finalist for the Senior CLASS Award. In addition, Lavelle ranks sixth in the Big Ten with an average of 3.45 shots per game.
7. Powers and freshman Payton Wesley are the only players thus far to record both a goal and an assist in a game.
8. Goalkeeper Caitlyn Clem ranks fourth in the Big Ten with a goals against average of 0.77. Clem also ranks 27th in the country in goalie minutes played with 1878:33 minutes logged and her eight shutouts rank 35th in the nation.
9. It will be UW's 19th appearance in the NCAA tournament. The Badgers hold a 14-17-2 (.455) all-time NCAA tournament record. Eight Big Ten teams made it into the first round of the NCAA tournament and all eight are host teams.
10. Wisconsin met Marquette just once this season in an exhibition game on Aug. 11. UW came away with the 2-0 victory in Milwaukee.
11. UW leads the all-time series with Marquette 6-5-2 and 3-2-0 in Madison. The last time the two teams met in a regular game was in the 2010 postseason. The Badgers battled the Golden Eagles to a 2-2 draw but lost in the penalty kick shootout in Milwaukee. The two in-state rivals are 1-1-1 against each other in the NCAA tournament.

- This is the second time that Wisconsin and Marquette have met this season. The teams last faced each other in Milwaukee on Aug. 11th in an exhibition game where the Badgers came out on top 2-0.
- Wisconsin holds a slight edge in the all-time series with a 6-5-2 advantage. The Badgers also have an edge in the series in Madison, 3-2-0
- The Badgers struck first in the third minute as Sydney McGinnis got her foot on a cross from Dani Rhodes to beat a diving Henry back to her left.
- All-American Rose Lavelle added Wisconsin's second goal of the opening frame in the 29th minute and the Badgers took a 2-0 lead into the half.
- MU's best look of the night came in the 80th minute after a great individual effort from Cali Pyzdrowski kept possession and got the back up from the midfield.
- Pyzdrowski sent a cross to her left back towards the far side of the field to Molly Pfeiffer, who hit the crossbar with a header.
- The Golden Eagles are the current Big East regular-season champions, posting a 7-2-0 record
- The team most recently lost to No. 7 Georgetown 2-0 in the Big East title match
- Marquette is no stranger to the Big Ten, having played three other Big Ten teams this season
- UM dropped B1G games against Nebraska (2-1)and Northwestern (1-0), while defeating Michigan 2-1
- Senior Morgan Proffitt racked up big preseason honors this year, including being named to the MAC Hermann Trophy watchlist and preseason All-Big East team while also being deemed the Big East Conference Preseason Defensive Player of the Year
- Marquette fell to No. 7 Georgetown, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon in the title match of the BIG EAST Conference Women's Soccer Championship at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C.
- The BIG EAST regular season champion Golden Eagles (12-7-2) were outshot 16-1 on the afternoon by the Hoyas (16-2-3), who captured their first league tournament crown with the victory. BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year Morgan Proffitt was named to the all-tournament team for Marquette along with freshman goalkeeper Maddy Henry, who made seven saves, and redshirt sophomore forward Carrie Madden.
- Marquette is now 2-2 all-time in the BIG EAST tournament finals with titles in 2012 and 2013 and runner-up finishes in 2009 and 2016.
Georgetown's Grace Damaska tallied the day's first goal after settling the ball at the top of the box before turning and firing in a strike over the outstretched arms of Henry. The Hoyas' score came as they established possession in the attacking third a minute earlier as Rachel Corboz fed the ball ahead to a streaking Damaska with MU pushed up at the other end. Henry came up to meet Damaska at the edge of the box to deny her in a one-on-one battle. - Marquette's lone first half shot came in the 37th minute on a strike by Liz Bartels that was saved by GU's Arielle Schechtman at the near post.
- Corboz posted the day's second tally in the 52nd minute after settling a rebound off a post shot from Chloe Knott. Henry dove to her left in an attempt to get Knott's strike before the ball bounced out to Corboz, who was waiting at the edge of the 6-yard box for her 10th of the year.
