Five Badgers claim Pointer Open titles

All seven UW wrestlers advance to finals
STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Wisconsin wrestling began open tournament action with an explosive start as five wrestlers secured first-place titles at the Pointer Open and two claimed runner-up titles. All seven Badgers that competed advanced to the finals of their respective weight classes.
The Badgers compiled a total of 10 pins in less than 28 minutes. UW had the best winning percentage of all 10 schools invited with a 93 percent winning percentage. The Badgers tallied 27 wins and suffered just two losses.
Freshman Ben Stone had the second-most pins of any wrestler in the tournament with three pins on the day. He also had the third-fastest fall in the tournament with a fall over UW- Steven Points' Kody Priesgen in 37 seconds in his opening match. Three of his four wins en route to claiming the heavyweight crown came in the form of pins, including his final win over Matt Halverson of UW-Parkside (Fall 4:27).
Wrestling unattached, freshman Jacob Covaciu posted the most points team points for any wrestler in the tournament with a total of 16 team points. At 165 pounds, Covaciu earned his way into the title-match after winning with two falls and a decision. He used a 5-3 decision over Logan Hermsen of UWSP to clinch the 165-pound first-place crown.
Freshman Patrick Spray opened his collegiate career by taking first place at 141 pounds with two wins by major decision and a 3-2 decision in the first-place match.
Also wrestling unattached, freshman Zander Wick used a fall, decision and major decision to claim first place at 149 pounds in his first collegiate open tournament.
Senior Rylan Lubeck made a move to 157 pounds this season and took first place in his first tournament of the year. He won by decision, 4-0, over teammate Izaec Quintanilla in the first-place match. Lubeck tallied two decisions before that, a 9-2 win over Joseph Heinz (Concordia-Moorehead) and a 5-0 blanking over Brett Scoles (UW-Parkside).
Quintanilla finished as runner-up after pinning his opponents in the quarterfinal (Tanner Goddard – 1:49) and semifinal (Steven Collins – 1:16).
Freshman Mason Reinhardt finished in second at 197 pounds and tallied two falls in the Pointer Open. He pinned John DePersia in his opening match in 2:23 before pinning Joseph Foret in 2:17 in the semifinal. He fell to Mason Baumgartner by decision, 5-3, in the final.
