AMES, Iowa – In the first battle of the season between two of the nation's top throwers in Wisconsin women's track and field standout
Kelsey Card and Mississippi's Raven Saunders, Card won the first round with a victory in the weight throw at the Iowa State Classic on Friday at the Lied Recreation Center.
Card, a two-time Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week honoree this season, won her fifth event of the season with a season-best toss of 69 feet, 7 inches, besting Saunders by almost five feet. Card's mark currently leads the Big Ten Conference and ranks seventh nationally.
The duo battled numerous times during the 2015 season, including the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships where Saunders came back to defeat Card in the shot put.
Card and Saunders, who hold the top-two spots in the nation this year in the shot put, will go head-to-head again in that event on Saturday at noon.
Card wasn't the only one to shine in the weight throw, as redshirt freshman
Banke Oginni finished fourth with a toss of 61-4. Oginni ranks seventh in program history in the event and 13th in the Big Ten this year.
Fellow redshirt freshman
Kennedy Blahnik also placed 11th in the event with a throw of 55-3.
In the long jump, junior
Georgia Ellenwood took second-place with a jump of 19-0, only half an inch shy of her personal record. Teammate
Casie Pawlik came away with seventh place after earning a mark of 18-3.
Ellenwood and Pawlik also competed in the 60-meter hurdles with Ellenwood taking 12th in 8.80 seconds, and Pawlik coming in 16th after clocking in at 8.98.
True freshman and Madison, Wisconsin, native
Amy Davis had a standout performance in her season-debut of running the 5000 meters. Davis captured 12th place after finishing with a solid time of 16:25.52, which ranks fifth in the Big Ten this year.
Redshirt senior
Gabi Anzalone, who unlike Davis, is no stranger to the 5000 meters, placed 21st overall after finishing in 16:33.61.
Sophomore
Ebony McClendon ran in the 200 meters taking first in her section and fifth overall after crossing the line in 24.37.
Redshirt junior
Michele Lee's success on the track continued Friday as she set another personal-best mark. Lee finished second in her section of the 3000 meters and 16th overall in 19:36.14 to best her previous record by over seven seconds.
Redshirt sophomore
Jamie Shannon also fared well in the 3000 meters, winning her section in 9:48.90. She took 27th overall and earned a new personal record as well.
Freshman
Emma Haugen wrapped up the field events with an eighth place finish in the high jump with a clearance of 5-7.
"Overall, it was a great day for us," UW Director of Track and Field and Cross Country
Mick Byrne said. "Several of our athletes set personal records including
Amy Davis, Michelle Lee and
Banke Oginni, while
Kelsey Card looked impressive in the weight throw. This is what we want to see heading into the Big Ten meet in two weeks.
"The level of competition here at Iowa State is at a very high level and our student-athletes did a fantastic job today."
Wisconsin returns to action Saturday at the Iowa State Classic, as running events begin at 10 a.m. with the women's 800 meters. The first field events of the day happen at noon with the women's shot put and women's triple jump.
