Lavelle named to U.S. U-23 Women's National Team roster

UW junior midfielder will travel to Croatia for three matches in March

MADISON, Wis. – Rose Lavelle of the Wisconsin women's soccer team has been named to the U.S. Under-23 Women's National Team roster that will travel to Croatia and play three matches in the eight-team Istria Cup, which runs from March 2-7.

Announced by U.S. Soccer on Tuesday, Lavelle was one of 20 players named to the roster for the team's first overseas trip of the year. Lavelle and Danielle Colaprico are two players who join the U-23 team after spending most of January training with the full U.S. Women's National Team in Los Angeles. Lavelle also trained with the USWNT in December for the final four matches of its Victory Tour.

The USA opens the competition on March 2 against the full Slovenia Women's National Team, will face the Poland U-19 Women's National Team on March 4 and finishes against the France National "B" Team. France's full Women's National Team will be competing in the SheBelieves Cup during that time in the United States. The other teams in the tournament are the full National Teams of Croatia, Slovakia and Northern Ireland, as well as the Hungary National "B" Team. Those four teams will play games against each other. The full Hungary Women's National Team will be competing in the Cyprus Cup during that time.

The U.S. will be coached by Janet Rayfield, who has called up 20 players to travel to central Europe, 11 of whom are already in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) or preparing for their rookie seasons this spring. Eight are collegiate players, including Lavelle, while one has finished her college eligibility.

The 2015 Big Ten Midfielder of the Year, Lavelle had a breakout season offensively for Wisconsin last year with a team-leading 17 points on seven goals and three assists. The first Badger to be named a first-team All-American since 1991, Lavelle was also a semifinalist for the 2015 MAC Hermann Trophy, which recognizes the top individual player in college soccer. Lavelle was a second-team All-American in 2014 as a sophomore and was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2013.
