MADISON, Wis. -- Derek Steinbach and John Stocco, both of whom were student-athletes at the University of Wisconsin, have been hired by the UW Athletic Development Office, Assistant Athletic Director for Development Chad Kimmel announced Thursday.
Steinbach, a former track and field athlete, joins UW as the Director of Development for Premium Seating and Major Gifts. In this role, he will oversee all operational aspects of UW's premium seating program, which generates more than $10 million annually. Steinbach will also work as part of the department's efforts to secure major gifts for scholarships and capital projects.
Prior to returning to UW, Steinbach spent three years with the Missouri athletic department, beginning as an Event Management Associate then moving on to become a Development Associate with the Tiger Scholarship Fund and eventually an Assistant Director of Development.
Steinbach graduated from UW-Madison in May 2012 with a bachelor's degree in sociology and earned his master's degree in Intercollegiate Athletic Leadership from the University of Washington in 2013. He got his start in athletics at Wisconsin, working for two years in the ticket office. A four-year letterwinner and two-time All-Big Ten performer for the UW men's track and field team, Steinbach was an NCAA qualifier in the decathlon as a senior and helped the Badgers win the 2012 Big Ten outdoor championship.
Stocco, a former quarterback for the football team, joins UW as Director of Development in a partnership role with the UW Foundation. In this position, Stocco will be focused on prospect identification, cultivation and solicitation of major gifts to fund student-athlete scholarships and capital projects.Â
Prior to joining UW, Stocco served as the Athletic Director at Chicago Bulls College Prep, a high school in Chicago. During his four years there, Bulls' teams won 22 conference championships.
A three-year starter for the Badgers, Stocco has the second-highest winning percentage of any starting quarterback in UW history. He led Wisconsin to a 29-7 mark, including wins in the 2006 and 2007 Capital One Bowls. Stocco ranks third on UW's all-time list for career passing yards, passing touchdowns, completions and attempts. His 2,920 passing yards in 2005 ranks second only to Russell Wilson on Wisconsin's single-season list. Stocco graduated from UW-Madison in December 2006 with a degree in life sciences communication.
