Win streak comes to an end as the Badgers fall at Purdue, 5-2
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Wisconsin women's tennis team's two-game win streak came to an end Sunday morning as it fell to Purdue (11-11, 4-6), 5-2, in the final road match of the season. The Badgers drop to 6-13 following today's loss.
Â
"Tough day," said head coach Tina Samara. "Really what we saw today was inconsistency on most courts at some point during the matches."
Â
UW got off to a slow start on the doubles courts as Purdue won the first two matches and then forfeited the third.
Â
Andjela Djokavic and Nicole Robinson teamed up to take down Lauren Chypyha and Lauren Burich, 6-2. Meanwhile, the duo of Krisztina Kapitany and Marta Ruedas-Burgos clinched the doubles point for the Boilermakers by knocking off Ekaterina Stepanova and Sydney Rider, 6-3.
Â
In addition, Kelsey Grambeau and Kendall Kirsch were in a tight match on court 3 with Claudia Escribens and Natalia Davila until the match came to a halt at 4-5.
Â
After failing the pick up the doubles point, the Badgers had ground to make up on the singles courts.
Â
No. 90 Stepanova picked up her fifth straight victory as she knocked off Kapitany, 6-4, 7-5. Stepanova moves to 18-6 on the year after today's victory.
Â
In addition, Burich capped off her impressive weekend with a 6-3, 0-6, 7-6 (6) victory over Escribens.
However, that was all the Badgers managed to pick up as they fell on courts 1, 4 and 5 and ultimately lost 5-2.
Â
"Unfortunately we haven't been able to bring consistency to the table on a regular basis this season," added Samara. "As a result we've had some highs and some lows both individually and as a team."
Â
The Badgers will look to rebound as they head home and host Rutgers on Friday, April 22 at Nielsen Tennis Stadium. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m. (CT).
