Schwartz, Cooper and Randle among nation’s best
MADISON, Wis.— Wisconsin women's openweight rowers Hannah Schwartz and Gillian Cooper and women's lightweight rower Helena Randle were each named 2016 Pocock All-Americans, as announced by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association on Thursday. Schwartz and Randle both picked up their second All-America honors, being named to the second team and lightweight team respectively, while Cooper earned her first second-team All-America honor.
Schwartz is now the Badgers' first two-time openweight All-American. Earlier this month, she became the first two-time first-team CRCA all-region rower in school history. A 2016 All-Big Ten second-team rower, Schwartz competed at her third NCAA championships this year, helping the varsity eight to a ninth-place finish. Her boat placed 13th in 2015 and 17th in 2014 at NCAAs. An english and legal studies double major, Schwartz is also a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
Cooper, a native of Auckland, New Zealand, joined Schwartz in the varsity eight for the past three seasons. A first-team All-Big Ten rower and an Academic All-Big Ten pick this season, Cooper helped the Badgers' varsity eight place third at the 2016 Big Ten Championships and the team to a second-place finish at the event.
Randle garnered her second All-America nod to cap an impressive career with the Badgers. A biology major, Randle is a two-time CRCA Scholar-Athlete, a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and a two-time IRA All-Academic recipient. The Brookline, Massachusetts, native rowed five seat with the lightweight eight that placed fourth at the 2016 IRA National Championships. Randle's boats placed third at the EAWRC Sprints, the Big Ten/ Big 12 Invite, the Charles River Lightweight Invitational and the Knecht Cup this season.
Openweight athletes are selected to the first and second teams based on the program's varsity eight finish within the country, coach comments and 2k erg scores. The lightweight All-America team is selected on the basis of performance at the IRA National Championships in the lightweight women's eight event and distributed based on the team's results in the grand final.
